What counts as cheating?

This is a really difficult question to answer, because what is acceptable to one party can be completely inappropriate behaviour to the other.

According to www.truthaboutdeception.com cheating is difficult to define but in an effort to give a description, we can say that:

“cheating is betraying your partner’s expectations about the type of contact you have with others.”

Many couples don’t talk about what is classed as cheating and some people prefer this as it makes it easier for them to cheat if the rules aren’t defined, thus making it easier to deceive themselves and their partner!

Some believe that it is unacceptable to

  • Engage in sexual talk with someone else
  • Exchange personal e-mails or text messages
  • Deny being married or in a relationship
  • Meet members of the opposite sex for coffee without partner's knowledge
  • Chat online with someone else (online affairs)
  • Have sexual contact with someone else (physical infidelity)
  • Add people on social networking sites without partner's knowledge/agreement
  • Become emotionally involved with someone else (emotional infidelity)
  • Share their most private thoughts and feelings with someone else
  • Become best friends with someone of the opposite sex

Let us know what you think about what you think is cheating and what isn’t by emailing us.
